Google Forms New AI Focused Group Google DeepMind to Bolster Competitive Edge Against Rivals

Highlights

  • Google is bringing its two world-class AI research teams, the Brain team from Google Research and DeepMind, together under one unit called Google DeepMind.
  • The combined talent of the Brain team and DeepMind, along with Google's computational resources, will accelerate Google's progress in AI significantly.
  • Demis Hassabis, as CEO of Google DeepMind, will lead the development of Google's most capable and responsible general AI systems, which will power the next generation of products and services.
  • Jeff Dean will serve as Chief Scientist to both Google Research and Google DeepMind, taking on an elevated role.
  • Google Research will continue to lead fundamental advances in computer science across various areas and will report to James Manyika along with his existing Tech & Society teams.

Last month we reported that Google and DeepMind set aside rivalry to take on OpenAI's ChatGPT. Now Google has implemented organizational changes to achieve greater symmetry between its teams, aiming to enhance its competitive edge against rivals.

Google claims to be an AI-first company since 2016 and they have been using AI to improve their core products, including search, YouTube, Gmail, and even the camera in Pixel phones. As part of their commitment to delivering on their mission, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has made these changes to accelerate their progress in AI and help develop more capable and responsible AI systems.

DeepMind is a subsidiary of Google that focuses on artificial intelligence. More specifically, it uses a branch of AI called machine learning, which can include approaches like deep neural networks and reinforcement learning to make predictions. DeepMind has formed a team of researchers and developers called DeepMind for Google that applies its research work to Google’s products and infrastructure.

To ensure the responsible and bold development of general AI, Google is creating a unit called Google DeepMind that will bring together two leading research groups in the AI field: the Brain team from Google Research and DeepMind. This unit will significantly accelerate their progress in AI as it combines all their talents into one focused team, backed by the computational resources of Google.

As CEO of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis will lead the development of their most capable and responsible general AI systems, which will help power the next generation of their products and services. Jeff Dean will take on the elevated role of Google's Chief Scientist, reporting to Sundar Pichai. In that capacity, he'll serve as Chief Scientist to Google Research and Google DeepMind. Working alongside Demis, Jeff will help set the future direction of their AI research and head up their most critical and strategic technical projects related to AI.

The announcement of this unit is a significant step towards developing AI more responsibly, and it shows Google's commitment to delivering on their mission. The pace of progress is now faster than ever before, and the collective accomplishments of Google DeepMind are already impressive.
